He would turn up at our house every Thursday and cut my lawns. I felt so guilty that I started cutting them on a Wednesday night. Next morning he would see that the lawns had been cut, he would pause for a while then paint my window frames. I could not win. Just before that time and in the mid 1980s I was well into running. He was from Bilston in the West Midlands and a couple of times a week he went to a pub in Bradley. There was a well known road race called the Bradley Marathon, it is actuately about 6 miles or so. I nearly won it in 1986, I came a very close second. He told me briefly that he had mentioned it to his friends in the pub in Bradley. I was gobsmacked as they say in the Black Country. HER DAD DISAPPROVED ©
by Robbie Kennedy Bennett
When we first met we were young and carefree,
She was a little bit younger than me.
And we went to the youth club dance,
Her dad disapproved of our youthful romance.
Then all of a sudden we were wed,
A few years passed before we wet a babes head.
Did her dad disapprove of our youthful romance,
He played with our kids when we went out and dance.
Did her dad disapprove the day we were wed,
When he sat with our kids and put them to bed.
And didnt he often come looking for me,
To find out where I was likely to be.
And I brought him a pint when he found where I were,
A dinnertime drink I could never deter.
We played the football pools together,
He worked on my house in all kind of weather.
We went to the seaside and backed a slow horse,
It should have done better when raced around the course.
Did her dad disapprove the day we were wed,
I heard about me that he had once said.
I was the son that he had never had,
To come from Hag it couldnt be bad.

My son he always kept his eyes on,
He was there for him day and night.
When we went for a ride to the club or seaside,
He kept him within his sight.
My son he sat down on a step at Borth,
His grandad sat there by his side.
While my son sat down on a step at Borth,
His grandad watched over with love and with pride.

The pub in the poem is the Victoria Inn that as a sun terrace upstairs overlooking Cardigan Bay. In July 2008 my wife and I spent a couple of days at Borth and couldn’t resist a nostalgic drink there. Although somewhat changed and with no access into the room where the photograph was taken, it was nice to recall that moment.
