Down and beyond the busy old streets
Lying low below and beneath,
Is a physical world in Edinburgh's embrace
There flows the Water of Leith.

She hides in the heart of the city
A dozen or so long miles she flows,
Resembling a trail of a princesses long tail
She blankets she covers and grows.

The wildlife feed from her natural existence
They live and settle and breed,
With the abundance of woodlands and burrows
They have all that they need indeed.

The wash of the water is cotton wool white.
Around stepping stones and branches,
She swirls and sways in all types of ways
She prances in tune as she dances.

On the banks are buildings of the historical past
Presenting at night a haunting sight,
Decaying from Edinburgh's industrial change
A sad but scenic delight.

To conclude what's beyond the busy old streets
Lying low below and beneath,
From the Pentland Hills passing ruins of mills
Balerno, through Edinburgh to Leith.
