Scotland is heaped in history, legend, mystery and stories but on 21 December 1988 came news that would shock the world. A bomb planted on board Pan Am Flight 103 named Clipper Maid of the Seas on route from Heathrow to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York exploded in the sky over the Border town of Lockerbie killing all 259 passengers and crew, and 11 people on the ground below.

On 21 December 2008 the 20th anniversary of the air disaster arrived and 8 days later my wife and I arrived at Drysdale Cemetery on the outskirts of Lockerbie to show our respect. There is a Memorial and Garden of Remembrance with names of those unfortunate victims and heartbreaking messages from their loved ones.

It is in a lovely peaceful setting in the Dumfries and Galloway countryside. Upon seeing first hand the names and where they were from saddened this reader and his wife. The reality of this terrible act was there to see. There were messages to love your life while you are able to and not to take it for granted.
